Brrrr! It's Cold Outside!

Here are some tips for staying safe in cold weather:

  • Dress warmly: Wear multiple layers of loose-fitting, warm clothing, including a hat, mittens, and scarf. Cover your mouth to protect your lungs. Wear a tightly woven, wind-resistant coat or jacket.

  • Stay dry: Moisture can increase heat loss. Pack extra clothes and take frequent breaks in a warm, dry place.

  • Stay active: Staying active helps maintain body heat.

  • Drink warm fluids: Drink plenty of warm water or warm fluids, but avoid alcohol and caffeine.

  • Avoid overexertion: Avoid overexertion when shoveling snow or walking in the snow to reduce the risk of a heart attack.

  • Stay off the roads: If possible, stay off the roads. If you're trapped in your car, stay inside.

  • Watch for signs of hypothermia or frostbite: If you notice signs of hypothermia or frostbite, get out of the cold immediately. Signs of hypothermia include numbness, low energy, discolored skin, and fumbling hands. If someone's temperature is below 95°F, seek medical attention immediately.

  • Warm yourself if you have frostbite: If you notice signs of frostbite, move inside and warm yourself with warm water or body heat.
